The Christmas tree is still up and we haven't had New Year's Eve yet, but the supermarkets have already moved on.

Easter eggs are appearing on supermarket shelves with many supermarket chains starting to display their Easter eggs on Boxing Day.

Asda in Carterton is just one of the supermarkets displaying Creme eggs and Mini eggs while Waitrose has Easter bunnies on the shelves.

Budget chain B&M is already selling Easter eggs and displays have also been spotted in various Tesco and Co-op stores before the New Year, much to the horror of many shoppers.

Asda, which started displaying Christmas products in September, said customers like it as they want to 'spread the cost' and it allows them to get ahead with shopping.

However, Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd, a consumer psychologist from Anglia Ruskin University, said shoppers actually end up spending more in the long run.

She told the Mirror: "It's not because the shops want to start Christmas in October or Easter in January, it's just purely to get people to buy more and little by little you'll spend twice as much."

Easter is on March 31, 2024 - in 92 days' time.
