Carterton trio David Clanfield, Paul Sharman and Alan Prew went down to an agonising defeat in the final of the Bowls England men’s national triples championship at Leamington Spa.

Leading the Spencer Moulton (Wiltshire) trio of Andrew Colebrook, Russell Fra-ncis and Graham Shadwell by one shot with one end to play, it looked like the Oxfordshire side would clinch the crown.

However, the team from Wiltshire claimed two shots on the concluding end to consign the Carterton side to a 15-14 defeat as they took the title by the narrowest of margins.

Prew’s side had booked their place in the final in impressive style, scoring a seven on the first end as they defeated Keith Height, Matt Pownall and Callum Height from Thrapston (Northamp-tonshire) 27-2.

The Height trio conceded victory after just 11 ends.

Spencer Moulton had rea-ched the finale with an 18-7 victory against Kings, Devon.

Earlier, Carterton kicked off their campaign with a 16-9 win against Stenalees, Corn-wall before beating Bolton 28-9 in round two.

The Oxfordshire side defeated Worthing Pavillion BC 16-14 in the third round, before seeing off the challenge of Boscombe Cliff BC (Hampshire) 16-12 to reach the semi-finals.
