Sam Humphreys is hoping for a successful pre-season as he looks to get in the frame for first-team selection, writes David Pritchard.

The19-year-old from Chipping Norton has just agreed a one-year deal with an additional 12-month option held by the club.

Humphreys made his first-team debut as a late substitute in United’s 1-0 win at Newport County on the final day of the season last month.

The winger has spent the close season working to improve his physical strength in a bid to stake a claim during pre-season.

“Hopefully I’ll have a good preseason and impress,” said Humphreys.

“I’ll see if I can get on the bench for the first game and then go from there to show them what I can do.

“Last season was an introduction to the professional game, I only made one appearance, but I feel I can do a lot more this season.

“Last pre-season I was involved a bit.

“I played in the Wolves game here, which was good. But I didn’t do as well as I can, it was a bit of an introduction. Hopefully I can do better than that this season.”

Meanwhile, Humphreys said he had no hesitation in extending his stay.

He said: “As a youngster at Oxford it’s your dream to make your professional debut.

“I’ve done it, but I’ve not sat back – I’ve been working towards preseason, so hopefully I can hit the ground running and show them what I can do.

“I don’t want to end my Oxford career with one appearance, I want to make ten, 20, 30 and just go on.”

Humphreys was among the first to hit the treadmill when Oxford United’s squad returned for the first day of pre-season training.

He was part of a group of players who live locally that returned for gruelling physical testing at Oxford Brookes University.

Meanwhile, former North Leigh striker Conor McDonagh has signed for Southern League side Didcot Town, having spent last season with Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Ossett Albion.
