AN ecstatic Danny Hylton described Oxford United's 2-1 victory at York City as their most important result of the campaign.

The win boosted momentum which had been flagging after collecting just two points from a possible nine before the result on Tuesday night.

Hylton, who scored the opening goal for his fifth of the season, was in no doubt over the siginificance of collecting maximum points at Bootham Crescent, which kept the U's sixth in Sky Bet League Two.

He said: "It's huge, the biggest of our season so far I think.

"We hadn't won in three and needed to win to reach our target that we have set ourselves for every five games.

"We're up north for four days and the morale is going to be good now. It leaves in good stead for (Accrington Stanley on) Saturday."

United had to do it the hard way, after a slip from Jake Wright gave York's Rhys Turner an open goal in which to equalise before half-time.

Hytlon admitted it was a blow to concede in such a fashion, but praised the response from the visitors, who won the game when a richochet at a corner hit Kemar Roofe and found the net.

He said: "You just think it's going to be hard now to get another goal because they've got something to hold on to.

"But we have good players and we showed we can keep the ball well.

"Thankfully we got that bit of luck and Roofey's managed to score off his belly, or whatever it was."

U's boss Michael Appleton was relieved to collect a deserved three points.

He said: "It shouldn't have been that way.

"Certainly in the first half I thought we absolutely dominated the game.

"We made countless opportunities and probably picked the wrong pass or the wrong cross, although their keeper to be fair made some fantastic saves and the defenders made some fantastic blocks.

"In the second half I genuinely didn't see them scoring, unless we made another error."

On the goal United conceded, he said: "At the last minute Jake slipped, so it was one I'm going to have to watch again, but I don't want to.

"To be fair Sam (Slocombe, United's goalkeeper) had to make one save in the game and came up trumps for us with a vital save early in the second half."
